Sedgefield Hunt has a long history. We organized as an established hunt in 1927 and met criteria to be recognized by the Masters of Foxhounds Association in 1941. The original location of the hunt was Guilford County, NC, and has now been expanded into Rockingham County, NC and southern Virginia. Territory is predominately open farmland and wooded trails.
The Sedgefield Hunt maintains a pack of mostly Penn-Marydel foxhounds, which are known for their beautiful voices, placid disposition, and tenacity in tough hunting conditions. Game is red and gray fox, coyote, and bobcat.
Hounds meet twice a week from October to March. Usual hunting days are Wednesdays and Saturdays, but may vary depending on weather, footing, and landowner preference. There are usually three “flights”, or groups of riders in the field. First flight runs and jumps and stays up with the action, second flight is a bit more sedate, and third flight, or “Hilltoppers”, stay at a greater distance from the action and cover ground more slowly. While you do need to be comfortable riding your horse cross country in a group setting, these three flights enable almost everyone to find their preferred speed. All groups are equally able to enjoy the day’s hunting.
Members also enjoy many social activities outside of hunting season, making membership in Sedgefield Hunt a year-round benefit.
Guests and non-members are welcome to hunt with us up to four times a season for a minimal capping fee. Please make arrangements with our honorary secretary in advance of the date you wish to attend.
