About this event
This clinic will teach interested people about foxhunting. No membership or hunt affiliation is required. We invite all riders to attend. Our clinic is open to everyone...juniors and adults, western or english tack.... who ride well enough to be able to control their horse in the open in a group. There will be jumping and non-jumping groups available.
Session one...the unmounted classroom session will be held at Flintrock Farms' meeting room. Our speakers will be experienced hunt members who can help demistify hunting. Learn about what is expected, how to dress, what to do, and what group to ride with. We will cover the history and etiquette of foxhunting and answer questions. Light refreshments will be served.
Session two...the mounted session, will be held at one of our actual hunt territories. The morning ride will be in small groups as determined by your experience and comfort level riding cross country. We will review the skills needed for horse and rider for a successful outing. We will then break for lunch and let your horse have a well-earned rest. Be sure to bring water for your horse, as there is none on site, as well as your own lunch. After the lunch break, we will ride again. Hounds are coming this afternoon! You will have the opportunity to introduce your horses to hounds, and acclimate them to the sight and sounds of hounds. When horses are settled, we may (at the discretion of the huntsman in charge of hounds) take hounds and horses out for a ride around the territory you familiarized yourselves with that morning.
Basic groupings are as follows (we will discuss details at session one)
First flight: should be able to walk, trot, canter and jump up to 3 feet
Second flight: able to walk, trot, canter and hop over a log on the trail
Third flight: able to walk, trot and brief canter
Following the afternoon mounted session, we will gather for a tailgate picnic sponsored by hunt members. Socialize with other riders and enjoy some fellowship and final Q&A time.
We are also planning a "yard sale" Sunday afternoon. You may be able to find gently used riding coats or breeches, or maybe some tack or stable supplies. Members are encouraged to bring items to sell.
Session three: riders who successfully complete both session one and session two will earn a certifcate to particpate in an actual hunt on your choice of specific dates in the fall, which is included in your entry fee (a $60 value). Details will be available at session two to qualified riders.
Please register for session one and two independently. Session one and two are included in the cost for session two. There is no discount for not attending session one, and you must attend both sessions to earn your certificate to attend session three.
